Tips to Avoid Insurance Scams
- Require and verify ID from anyone who contacts you about your insurance claim.
- Don’t make agreements with contractors until your insurance company confirms what they’ll cover on your bid.
- Remember that your insurance company’s adjuster should not charge a fee to evaluate your damage.
- Public adjusters—who negotiate on behalf of homeowners—can. Check with your state for licensing, laws, and payment caps. (Ex. X% of your insurance settlement.)
- Per the FTC, ask your bank or credit union about creating a Certificate of Completion, where contractors are paid when work is completed.
