Cavana E., Predictive Modeling & Analytics Intern, read “The 21 Laws of Irrefutable Laws of Leadership” by John Maxwell with her mentor, Stanford S. Read on to learn more about Cavana’s intern experience and how the book strengthened her relationship with her mentor.
How would you describe your internship experience? What was your favorite part?
I came into this internship with no prior knowledge of the mortgage industry. Due to the many learning opportunities that Mr. Cooper has to offer, I was able to learn more about how the industry works and its relation to my role as a Predictive Modeling & Analytics Intern. It has also provided me with a space to sharpen my leadership and technical skills in the modeling and analytics realm.
How was the book “The 21 Laws of Irrefutable Laws of Leadership” beneficial to you during your internship?
This book taught me the important qualities that successful people embody. Incorporating these qualities in my day-to-day activities allowed me to make the most out of my experience and prepared me for future leadership opportunities.
How did the book strengthen your relationship with your mentor?
It helped me to brainstorm meaningful questions to ask my mentor during our weekly sessions. I was able to learn more about Stanford’s leadership role and the experiences that have helped to mold him into the industry professional that he is today.
Are there any useful tips/advice that you and your mentor were able to pull from the book? If so, please list a few below.
The Law of Respect: People don’t follow others by accident. They follow individuals whose leadership they respect. Having respect for others, adding value to others, being courageous, and being loyal to a cause are ways to gain respect as a leader.
The Law of Sacrifice: Effective leaders sacrifice much that is good in order to dedicate themselves to what is best. The more leadership responsibility a person takes on, the more sacrifices they will be expected to make.
The Law of Legacy: We have made at least a start in discovering the meaning in human life when we plant shade trees under which we know full well we will never sit.

What advice would you give any future interns at Mr. Cooper?
Mr. Cooper provides a variety of opportunities to learn in this internship program. There’s Cooper University, access to Degreed, an Executive Speaker Series, and many more channels for upskilling. If you want to make the most out of your experience and learn as much as you can, try your best to take advantage of it while you’re here.
