My name is Lynelle Frakes and I’m a Marketing Analyst on Mr. Cooper’s Purchase Marketing team! Prior to beginning my full-time role in August 2021, I spent the summer as Marketing Intern. I took this opportunity to soak up as much knowledge as I could.
My internship helped me determine that the company and this role were right for me. Here are 5 tips I used to turn my internship into a full-time position.
1. Have the right mindset
Your managers, mentors, and coworkers will all notice the mindset you have when it comes to your internship and the projects you are working on. Have a learning mindset—be eager to learn everything you can, ask questions, and find ways to apply what you’ve learned.
2. Build relationships and expand your network
My mom always told me, “It’s not what you know, it’s WHO you know,” and she could not have been more right! Don’t be afraid to talk to people outside of your department and work with other people. Show off your teamwork and leadership skills by working on a project with another team. It’s also important to connect with your peers and other team members on LinkedIn. With LinkedIn, the possibilities can be endless when it comes to networking!
3. Be transparent
Vocalize your intentions with your manager right off the bat. Ask if there is a possibility to transition to full-time and be sure to follow up with them about any opportunities. Doing this shows you are eager to continue your working relationship and persistent in achieving your goals!
4. Be present and participate
Speak up and share your ideas! Even if your idea is not used, it could spark someone else to have an idea and so on and so on. Enthusiastic participation allows you to be an active and valuable member of the team.
5. Choose the right company for you
Job searching is like dating—you want to make sure the company is a good match for your needs as much as you are good for theirs. If you don’t feel it’s a good match, don’t be afraid to move on and keep looking!
Keep learning, network, and don’t be afraid to go after a new position if it’s the right fit for you.
