Mr. Cooper Group hosted its first class of virtual interns from across the U.S. this summer. To get an inside look, we asked interns from three departments about their experiences. Check out what Kesha (Information Technology Intern), John (Accounting Intern), and Miguel (Modeling/Analytics Intern) had to say!
What are you enjoying most about your internship?
Kesha
Mr. Cooper has a super friendly and welcoming team, especially my manager (Sudhir, Executive Principal Systems Architect) who is very open-minded, as well as the most supportive person I have ever met! For instance, on my first day, I told Mr. Sudhir that I would like to work on Python, SQL, and GCP (Google Cloud Platform). He gave me a work packet and tasks related to my topics of interest. I cannot thank him enough for making me feel connected with the team in this remote internship. He motivates me to give my best in my work.
John
I can work on meaningful projects and tasks. For example, I worked on a project to document the use cases of a reconciliation tool that is being replaced. At the end of the project, I got to present to the Chief Accounting Officer and my documentation will be used to help build out the new reconciliation tool. Also, I have had a wonderful experience being on the Sarbanes Oxley Compliance (SOX) team. Everyone on the team has been extremely welcoming and supportive.
Miguel
Being a part of a welcoming and caring group of people is what I’ve loved most. Every team member I have met has taught me something new and always treated me with respect. The culture here is really something special.
What has been the most challenging aspect of your internship?
Kesha
I loved developing my coding skills. Coming from a non-coding background, this was the most challenging aspect of being an intern but I’m learning so much!
John
As an intern on the SOX team, the most challenging aspect of the internship was learning and absorbing all the information about the Sarbanes Oxley Act and the mortgage industry. Although there was an initial learning curve, the internship provided me with the resources and tools to be successful.
Miguel
In school I could work on a project for a few weeks, submit my work, and at the end of the day the only person I had to answer to was myself. Now if I work on a project, I must be confident that I submit my best work and I can explain every conclusion I came to in a reasonable manner.
What has been your most memorable moment as an intern?
Kesha
Opening the box of swag with the other interns virtually. It was so much fun to have a little reveal/unboxing party together.
John
The intern social hour when the University Relations team sent us mocktails, where we all played games and got to know each other.
Miguel
The best moment for me has been that feeling of a lightbulb finally turning on. At first, it was when I finally understood how a new model is built, but now, I get that feeling every day when I work on a new model or make an improvement to yesterday’s model.
What advice do you have for future interns on how to be successful at Mr. Cooper Group?
Kesha
Make connections as much as you can, talk to people, and actively take part in all events.
John
Try to work on and learn as much as you can, even if it is outside of the scope for your role.
Miguel
Establish your lifelines, know who to ask questions to, and then get uncomfortable because that is when you will really learn something cool. That and invest in a good desk if you are working from home.
