5 Tips for Incorporating Understated Seasonal Décor

With the holidays JUST around the corner, you’ve likely already begun thinking about decorating your home for the season. And as far as home décor trends go, the days of flashy tensile and inflatable lawn ornaments are behind us. (Thank goodness!)

This year, understated, simple, and natural décor is in. If you’re ready to freshen up your seasonal décor in time for the holidays, we’ve got you covered. Here are 5 ways to make a big statement with understated seasonal décor.

1. Be intentional with color
You don’t have to stick to an all-neutral palette to create a sophisticated look during the holidays; however, you do need to be intentional about the colors you use. Find a few colors you love for the season and use them as your pops of color. Don’t feel like you have to stick to traditional holiday colors, either. As long as you’re consistent, you can get creative with the colors you choose and still achieve a cohesive design theme.

2. Curate decorations carefully
We know how it goes: Decorations are handed down from your parents, or you pick up a few new things each year but never get rid of the old stuff. At the end of the season, your décor is shoved in a storage box for the next 11 months. And by the time you pull out your decorations, you might not like some of it anymore. Instead of putting out every piece of décor that you own, be selective in the décor you use to style your space. Even if fewer in number, a carefully curated display of decorations can make a bigger statement than a larger display of “filler” décor.

3. Think broadly seasonal (versus holiday specific)
The trick to creating a home that transitions well into the next season is to focus on the season itself rather than just a specific holiday. During the fall and winter months, this often means bringing the outdoors in. Incorporating leaves, pinecones, and real pine may extend the life of your décor and allow you to keep it out for most of the winter. Of course you’ll want to add in a few holiday touches, but keeping a seasonal base will make decorating (and un-decorating) a cinch.

4. Use scents to make your space feel like the holidays
Our sense of smell is linked closely to memory, so choosing a signature scent for your home during the holidays is a nice way to make your home truly feel like the holidays. Sticking to the same fragrance throughout your home will keep the scent from being too overpowering — look for natural elements like pine and cedar or rich spices. Every time you smell your signature holiday fragrance, you’ll be reminded of the season.

5. Incorporate light
The holidays are a magical time, and no décor is more magical than lights. Incorporating twinkle lights, candles, and lamps instantly transforms any space into a cozy one. For an extra touch of magic, add a string of battery-powered lights to glass or mercury glass vases and bowls. Then, dim your overhead lights so your space feels equal parts festive and inviting.
