How To Keep Your House Cool During Warmer Months

There’s nothing worse than coming home to a warm house after you’ve endured a hot weather day, but running the air conditioner at full blast all day long isn’t exactly the best or most cost-effective solution either. Try not to sweat it, because there are some easy things you can do to make a sizable impact on the temperature of your home when it’s warm out. Here’s how to keep your house cool during the warmer months of th eyear.

1. Close Blinds & Curtains While You’re Away
This is one of the oldest tricks in the book, but you’ll be surprised by the difference it can make. When you leave for the day, make sure all of your windows are covered. Block even more sun and heat black-out curtains.

2. Swap Out Bedding
Some fabrics are great for keeping you warm on cold nights, but uncomfortably warm for hotter ones. Trade in the heavy blankets and sheets for lightweight, breathable materials like linen and cotton.

3. Rotate Ceiling Fans Counter Clockwise
When temperatures are warm, your ceiling fan should rotate counter-clockwise so that it will push cooler air straight down. When temperatures cool down, change the direction of your fan if necessary.

4. Keep Oven & Stove Use To A Minimum
Cooking in your oven or on your stove can quickly heat up your house. While cooking in the kitchen is not always avoidable, take advantage of grilling season by cooking outdoors as much as you can.

5. Close Vents In Unused Rooms
If there are rooms in your home that don’t get much use like a guest room or an office, consider closing the vents and shutting the doors. This will allow the rest of your home — namely the parts that are most used — to be cooled more efficiently.
